Proctoscopy
Rigid endoscopy of the anal canal
In performing an examination of the anal canal, we use two kinds of proctoscope. We use the proctoscope with the lateral aperture for sclerotherapy of haemorrhoids. The straight-ahead lens is used for “rubber band ligation”. For sclerotherapy, no preparation is required. If you are scheduled for rubber band ligation, however, you should perform a bowel movement before examination. An enema will sometimes need to be administered.
With a relaxed patient, the examination is safe and easy to perform.
The examination lasts about 2 minutes. It enables the discovery and treatment of anal fibromas (= anal polyps), tears in the mucosa (fissures), haemorrhoids or malignant degeneration.
